Composting Straw
Straw is the classic structural brown — light, carbon-rich, and just right for propping open a pile that's gone wet and dense. It's also the feedstock most likely to smuggle crop-killing herbicides into your garden without you ever knowing.
There's a good reason composters reach for straw: it's cheap, it's bulky, and it handles the structural work that dense greens simply can't. A single bale goes a long way, propping open soggy manure and grass clippings so the pile can actually breathe. But two things trip people up here — mixing up straw with hay, and not realizing a single contaminated bale can poison a garden for years afterward. A structural high-carbon brown
Wheat and oat straw sit around 100:1, ranging from roughly 50:1 to 150:1.[1] That's firmly a brown — heavy on carbon, light on nitrogen. Straw vs hay — they're not the same

Because hay is leafy and cut green, its C:N runs far lower — nearer 15–25:1 — so it behaves like a nitrogen green, not a brown. And critically, hay is full of seeds; use it in a pile that never gets hot and you'll be pulling grass and clover out of your beds for seasons afterward. Why straw wets slowly, and how to fix it
Straw's typical moisture is only around 15% — it arrives bone dry, and the waxy surface of the stalks sheds water rather than absorbing it. Toss dry straw straight into a pile and it can sit there unchanged for months while everything around it composts, simply because the microbes doing the work need moisture and aren't getting any. The fix is to soak it first: hose down each layer as you build, or dunk flakes in a tub of water before you add them. Chopping the straw or running a mower over it first also speeds things up considerably. Well-wetted, chopped straw layered with a nitrogen source will break down at a respectable pace despite its high C:N.
The contaminated-bale problem
This is the one that catches even experienced gardeners off guard. Persistent broadleaf herbicides — aminopyralid, clopyralid and relatives — get sprayed on grain and pasture to control weeds, and they can ride straw (and especially hay) straight through the composting process without breaking down.[2] The result is compost that stunts, cups, and kills sensitive crops — tomatoes, beans, peas, potatoes — at concentrations too low to detect by eye. Because straw comes from farms you don't control, ask before you buy: was the field treated with a long-residual herbicide?
