How Much Compost in a Container Mix?
Container mixes don't behave like in-ground soil. Since a pot only drains from the bottom, you're balancing moisture retention (compost, coir, or peat) against aeration (perlite or vermiculite). Load up on fine material — even well-decomposed compost — and you end up with a dense, waterlogged mix. Go too heavy on perlite and it drains so fast you'll be watering constantly.

Why Compost Percentage Matters in Containers
The main risk with high compost ratios in a container is soluble salt buildup. As compost keeps decomposing in the pot, it releases nitrogen and other nutrients — good news — but if drainage is poor, those salts can accumulate in the medium and burn roots. Where that threshold sits depends on the compost: manure-based composts tend to run a higher electrical conductivity (EC) than wood-chip or food-scrap-based composts. If you're pushing compost above 40%, it's worth checking the EC with an inexpensive soil meter. Aim for below 3.5 dS/m if you're starting seeds, below 5 dS/m for established transplants.
