Fresh grass clippings are probably the most abundant green you have on hand — a hot nitrogen source that'll heat a pile fast. Get the proportions wrong, though, and that same pile mats into a stinking mess just as fast.
Grass clippings are free, plentiful, and one of the strongest nitrogen sources you'll find as a backyard composter. They're also the ingredient most likely to turn your pile into a slimy, reeking brick — and both facts trace back to the same property. Fresh clippings are wet and loaded with nitrogen. A powerful green — sometimes a very hot one
Fresh clippings sit around 17:1, and they can drop toward 9:1 if the lawn's been heavily fertilized.[1] That's a lot of nitrogen — more concentrated than most of what comes out of your kitchen. Why grass mats, and how to stop it
Fresh clippings run around 80% moisture — they're mostly water, when you get down to it. Spread thick, that wet, fine material compresses under its own weight into a dense mat air can't get through. The microbes inside switch to anaerobic decomposition, and you get the classic sour, ammonia-and-sulfur reek of a grass pile gone wrong. Two habits keep it from happening: add clippings in thin layers (a couple of inches at most) sandwiched with browns, and turn the pile to keep air moving through it. If a mat's already formed, break it up, fork in some dry leaves or shredded paper, and turn.
Two ways to use surplus grass
Most lawns throw off more clippings than you'll ever have browns to match. You've got two good outlets for the surplus. The first is grasscycling — just leave the clippings on the lawn. A mulching mower returns them to the turf, where they break down and hand back roughly a quarter of the lawn's nitrogen needs. It doesn't cause thatch, by the way; that's a separate myth entirely. The second option is to dry the surplus yourself. The herbicide caution worth taking seriously
This is the one real hazard with clippings, so it's worth slowing down for. Most common lawn weedkillers break down during composting, but a family of persistent broadleaf herbicides — aminopyralid, clopyralid, and their relatives — can pass through a compost pile intact and survive for months to years.[2] Compost carrying them will stunt and curl sensitive crops like tomatoes, beans, and potatoes at tiny concentrations.
